Travel prep

To help make your trip as smooth as possible, we recommend preparing the following before coming to Switzerland:

☔️ Weather

Spring is in full swing in Bern by late April, with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 18°C (50°F to 65°F). Days can vary between sunshine, clouds, and the occasional shower, so we recommend dressing in layers, bringing a light jacket, and an umbrella.

🔌 Travel adapters & electricity

Switzerland uses Type C plugs (230V, 50Hz). Most European two-pin plugs work in Switzerland. A universal travel adapter will do the trick.

If you're bringing high-power devices from countries using 110V electricity, check that they support 230V before plugging them in. Otherwise, say goodbye to that appliance – and possibly the fuse box. When in doubt, battery-powered devices are the safest option.

🇪🇺 European travel

Switzerland is part of the Schengen Area, allowing free movement with most surrounding countries.

Some countries, such as the United Kingdom and Ireland, are not part of Schengen and may require separate entry requirements depending on nationality.

🛂 Travel documents

Please ensure your passport is valid for the duration of your trip.

⚕️ Travel insurance

Travel insurance is strongly recommended for all international guests for peace of mind during your journey.

🏨 Hotel confirmation

Keep a copy of your hotel reservation and travel itinerary with you. While rarely requested, it can be helpful during international travel.

💳 Payment methods

The currency in Switzerland is the Swiss Franc (CHF). Euros are not accepted. Credit and debit cards can be widely used. The exchange rate is approximately 1 CHF ≈ 1.1 USD. Rates fluctuate; check before travel.

🛜 Staying connected

Free Wi-Fi is widely available. Consider buying an eSIM or international roaming plan before arrival.
